More Than a JPEG: Solana Communities and the Perks of Belonging

More Than a JPEG: Solana Communities and the Perks of Belonging
Share

Ask someone outside crypto what an NFT community is and you will hear something about expensive pictures. Ask a Mad Lads holder who received sixteen thousand Wormhole tokens for doing nothing but holding, and you get a different answer.

Solana's communities have quietly become perk machines: part loyalty program, part social club, part index bet on an ecosystem's generosity. Here is what membership actually gets you in eight of the best known.

Solana Monkey Business: The Original Members' Club

SMB's pixelated monkes are among Solana's oldest NFTs, and the community around them, MonkeDAO, pioneered the "holder DAO" model — it eventually bought the SMB brand outright, making it one of the first NFT communities to own its own IP.

The perks: a gated Discord that functions as one of Solana's better filtered networks; a community wallet fed by 2% of SMB royalties; NFT-holder governance over the DAO's treasury and direction; MonkeFoundry, an incubator backing member projects; the Banana Stand, where members earn rewards for completing bounties; and MonkeVentures, a member investment syndicate with 35-plus funded teams. It is also one of the few communities that pays members to host meetups: community grants fund holder-organised events across 20-plus local chapters in 53-plus cities, with a per-attending-holder subsidy for organisers. There is no token here and never needed to be — the monke is the membership card, and the pitch is less "number go up" and more "a smart room you can't buy your way into cheaply."

Jupiter: Get Paid to Vote

Jupiter turned its community, the Catdets, into arguably the most rewarded user base in DeFi. Active Staking Rewards pay JUP quarterly to anyone staking 50-plus JUP who participates in governance votes — literally getting paid to show up. The Jupuary airdrops distributed billions of JUP across three annual rounds, the final one in January 2026. Community members got a real-world conference of their own, Catstanbul, where the team burned 30% of token supply live on stage. And Jupiter Mobile adds daily-life perks like card cashback. The model: reward attention, not just capital.

Mad Lads: The Airdrop Magnet

Backpack's flagship collection has a claim to being the most productive "hold one thing" strategy on Solana, and the record backs it up. Holders received 16,000 W per NFT from the Wormhole airdrop, plus allocations from Tensor, io.net, Sophon and others, delivered through badges embedded in the NFT itself — Mad Lads are xNFTs, apps rather than mere images. Staking a Mad Lad unlocks automatic VIP Tier 1 on Backpack Exchange with reduced trading fees, and Backpack's February 2026 token plan reserved 1% of total $BP supply for Mad Lads holders on top of any points. Here the NFT works like an ecosystem season pass.

Okay Bears: The Lifestyle Brand Route

We've covered Okay Bears before: the collection that took Solana NFTs mainstream in 2022. Its current era is less about flipping and more about brand, and the perk here is the brand itself. Okay Bears became the first Solana NFT collection to make a genuine mainstream retail crossover: an officially licensed apparel line with Zara, stocked in more than 1,100 stores across 74 countries as well as online, brokered through licensing giant IMG. Holding a bear is a stake in a consumer brand that escaped web3 — walk into a Zara and the thing on the shelf is the thing in your wallet. Add the "we're all gonna be okay" ethos and the perk is identity at retail scale rather than an airdrop.

Claynosaurz: The Character Headed for Your TV

Claynosaurz — 10,000 claymation-style dinosaurs built by artists with Illumination, DreamWorks, Sony and Disney pedigrees — is Solana's boldest bet that an NFT community can birth a real entertainment franchise. Holders own characters from a brand that has already gone mainstream: Claynosaurz released animated micro-episodes on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV, and signed with Mediawan Kids & Family to co-produce a 39-episode animated series. Holders get the 3D and AR assets of their own dino and ride shotgun as the brand chases Saturday-morning-cartoon status. If the series lands, these become the rare NFTs your kids recognise.

Bonk: The Everywhere Token

Bonk began as Solana's Christmas-2022 meme dog and grew into infrastructure: 400-plus integrations across DeFi, games and payments. The perks: single-sided staking via Bonk Rewards; BonkBot for Telegram trading; constant integration perks, from tipping to in-game currency to NFT mints priced in BONK; and BonkDAO governance, open to larger holders, which funds grants and marketing pushes. Community-driven burns are a spectator sport of their own. One honest caveat: in July 2026 BonkDAO suffered a governance attack in which an attacker spent roughly US$4.4 million buying votes to drain about US$20 million from the treasury — a reminder that open governance is a perk with sharp edges.

Moonwalk: Get Paid to Touch Grass, Literally

Moonwalk Fitness is the most tangible perk machine on this list: it pays you to walk. Join a challenge by staking SOL, USDC or BONK against a daily step goal; hit your steps and you keep your stake plus a share of what the couch-bound forfeit — CoinDesk tried it. It connects to Apple Health, Google Fit and Fitbit, needs no wallet to start, added fiat rails via Apple and Google Pay, and raised US$3.4 million from Hack VC to keep going. Loss-aversion as a fitness plan — degen psychology pointed at your health.

Superteam: Getting Paid to Touch Grass

Superteam is the odd one out: not a token or a collection but a talent network, and the most IRL-native community on this list. For Australians it comes with the most literal perk in this article: the Touching Grass Fund, a Superteam Australia grant that pays members up to 500 USDG to get Solana activity happening in the real world — community and growth work, applications answered within about a week. Your meetup idea is, quite directly, fundable.

The broader perks: Superteam Earn lists paid bounties and freelance projects from real Solana teams — the most direct "join community, receive money" pipeline in the ecosystem. Earned membership, via the XP system, unlocks member perks: discounted RPC infrastructure, up to US$25k in Alchemy credits with a member bonus, cash-advance access, mentorship across product and fundraising, and preferential access to RFPs from Superteam and partners like the Solana Foundation. The catch is the point: membership is earned by contributing, not bought.

What the Perks Are Really For

Look across all eight and a pattern emerges. Perks are how communities solve their retention problem: airdrops reward patience, gated Discords reward curation, bounties reward work, step challenges reward showing up. The common thread is that belonging is the asset and the perks are the yield.

For Australians and New Zealanders, the practical advice is simple: pick communities where you would participate even without the upside — then the upside, when it comes, is a bonus rather than a bag. And if your community of choice is the local one, remember the Touching Grass Fund will pay you to bring it together — or browse more ecosystem stories in our articles.
